On January 8, Ben Hansen meets Summer Finn, the brand new assistant to his boss. Tom trained as a possible architect but works as a writer at the greeting card company in L . a .. Following a karaoke night, Tom's friend and co-worker McKenzie reveals that Tom is drawn to Summer. During the next few months Summer and Tom grow more detailed, despite Summer's telling Tom that she won't believe in true love, and won't want a boyfriend.
Tom shows Summer his favorite spot inside city, which overlooks a number of buildings he likes, although this view is spoiled by airport parking lots. After several months associated with dating, Tom gets into a fight that has a man who flirts with Summertime, and they have their 1st argument. On day 290, Summer and Tom end their relationship as soon as they see The Graduate, a film which Tom thinks shows true love. Tom does not take this breakup well, and Tom's pals call his younger sister, Rachel, in order to calm him down. Summer quits her job on the greeting card company. Tom's boss moves him for the consolations department, as his depression seriously isn't suitable for happier events. Months later, as Summer and Tom attend the marriage of their co-worker Millie, they dance on the wedding and Summer catches this bouquet. They sit next to one another on the trip home, and Summer invites Tom into a party at her apartment. He attends the party expecting the two to rekindle the relationship, but instead spends the vast majority of evening alone drinking (unlike his expectations of the evening where Summer spends almost all her time with him, which is shown in split-screen together with the reality) until he spots Summer showing an engagement ring and realizes what type of party it is, at which point he leaves all around tears.
