Ten-year-old Chihiro Ogino and her parents are planning a trip to their new home when her father uses a wrong turn. They unknowingly type in a magical world that Chihiro's daddy insists on exploring. While Chihiro's parents eat like pigs at an empty restaurant stall, Chihiro finds a perfect bathhouse. She meets a young boy, Haku, who warns her to send back across the river before sundown. However, Chihiro discovers too late that her parents have become actual pigs and she struggles to cross the flooded river, becoming trapped inside the spirit world.
After finding Chihiro, Haku has her obtain a job from the bathhouse's boiler-man, Kamaji, a new spider yōkai commanding the susuwatari. Kamaji and the worker Lin send Chihiro on the witch Yubaba, who runs the actual bathhouse. Yubaba gives Chihiro employment but renames her Sen (千? ). Even though visiting her parents' pigpen, Sen finds a goodbye card addressed to Chihiro and realizes that my wife already forgotten her name. Haku warns her that Yubaba controls people through their names and that in case she forgets hers like he has forgotten his, she will not have the capacity to leave the spirit world. Even though working, Sen invites a muted masked creature named No-Face inside of, believing him to be an individual. A 'stink spirit' arrives and is also Sen's first customer. She discovers he or she is the spirit of a contaminated river. In gratitude for cleansing him, he gives Sen a new magic emetic dumpling. Meanwhile No-Face tempts a new worker with gold, then swallows your ex. He demands food and will begin tipping extensively. As the workers swarm him hoping for being tipped, he swallows yet one more two greedy workers.
