The movie begins with Ip Man reflecting on fighting techinques, and then cuts to a scene of your fight under the rain between Ip and a dozen combatants. Ip Man is the winner, and experiences flashbacks of the life, from his early training at the age of seven to his induction into fighting techinques by his master Chan Wah-shun, in addition to his marriage to his partner Cheung Wing-sing.
Ip Man's peaceful existence is threatened because of the arrival of Gong Yutian, a fighting techinques master from northern China, who announces which he has already retired and offers appointed Ma San as his heir in the North. He then concedes that this South should have its own heir. A flurry of discussions in addition to fights erupt as various masters attempt to challenge Gong, but they are extremely barred by Ma San. As the Southern masters are deliberating on a representative, Gong Yutian's daughter Gong Emergeny room arrives and she tries to convince her father to never continue the fight, as she feels all of them are unworthy. Meanwhile, the Southern masters choose Ip Man to represent these, and Ip proceeds to be approved by three Southern masters before he challenges Gong Yutian. However, the "fight" between Ip and Gong turns out to be actually an exchange of philosophical tips. Gong declares Ip the success and returns to northern Cina. However, Gong Er sets out to regain her family's honor by challenging Ip Man, plus they agree that if anything fails, Ip loses. "Kung Fu is around precision", so whoever breaks an item of furniture during the fight is definitely the loser. An intense fight fails out between Ip Man in addition to Gong Er, which concludes with victory intended for Gong because Ip broke a step for the very end. Ip and Gong and then part on friendly terms, with Ip saying he wants a new rematch.
