Anne (Meryl Streep), who owns a very good bakery in Santa Barbara, Florida, and Jake Adler (Alec Baldwin), a very good attorney, divorced ten years ago. They had three children collectively, two girls and a son, who are grown. Jake, who has been cheating on Jane, married the actual much younger Agness (Lake Bell).
Anne and Jake attend their child Luke's college graduation from St. John's University in New York City. Jake and Jane's children know nothing in the affair, but Harley (John Krasinski), that is engaged to their daughter Lauren, spots the pair plus the doctor in the hotel however keeps silent.
Adam (Steve Martin) is an architect hired to remodel Jane's residence. Still healing from a divorce of her own, he begins to fall fond of Jane. On the night involving Luke's graduation party in Santa Barbara, Jane invites Adam towards the party. She is stoned when they picks her up because she's got smoked a marijuana joint that Jake had given her earlier. Later at the party, Adam in addition smokes a joint with Anne.
