Carl Fredricksen is a shy, quiet boy who idolizes explorer Charles F. Muntz. Muntz has been accused of fabricating the skeleton of a giant bird he claimed to possess discovered in Paradise Falls, and vows to come back there to capture one living. One day, Carl befriends Ellie, that is also a Muntz fan. She confides to Carl her desire to move her "clubhouse" — an abandoned house inside the neighborhood — to a ledge overlooking Paradise Falls. Carl and Ellie eventually get married and get old together in the restored property, and they planned to possess children, but Ellie was identified as infertile, so Carl desired to fullfill their promise of go South America. They repeatedly pool their savings for just a trip to Paradise Falls, but turn out spending it on more pressing needs. An elderly Carl finally arranges for your trip, but Ellie suddenly will become ill and dies.
Some period later, Carl still lives in the house when he accidentally injures a construction worker over damage to his mailbox, and a court orders him to go to a retirement home. Even so, Carl comes up with a scheme to hold his promise to Ellie: he turns his house right makeshift airship, using thousands regarding helium balloons.
