After a surprisingly strong past month or two, the summer movie going time has finally arrived to (hopefully) crank the dial to 11. May is packed full of lots of exciting releases, from the superhero blockbuster towards the R-rated comedy – so much making sure that it’s hard to pick just one single must-see film for the 30 days.
Specifically, there are three films that rank extremely high not just on our many anticipated list for the month but in addition for the year, and that alone makes May a really exciting movie-going time. Whether or not those films will deliver is one more thing, but that’s the beauty with the last days before summer: everything has the potential to be great.
And so, without further ado, here are the 6 films we’re looking forward to in May 2014.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (Release in May 2nd)
It doesn't matter how fans may feel about the latest Spider-Man reboot, it’s pretty clear that Sony is doubling down around the Spidey franchise starting with the release with the Amazing Spider-Man 2. If rumors have to be believed, ASM 2 will not just secure Spider-Man’s future by bringing out upcoming villains and characters, but it will also set the stage for your Sinister Six movie.
We’ll disclose, though, that there were many dangling concerns surrounding The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but our early preview with the movie helped squash many those fears. The movie’s also already out in international markets thereby far reception has been mixed, but the general consensus will be that Amazing Spider-Man 2 is usually an improvement over the first picture. North American audiences will uncover for themselves very soon.
Neighbors (Release in May 9th)
The Seth Rogen comedy has become a staple of the summer movie season during the last few years, and that trend continues with all the release of Neighbors in first May. In this film, Rogen and Rose Byrne play new parents forced to do “battle” with the fraternity living across the street – a fraternity that just so is led by Zac Efron.
That premise in and of itself has the potential for Rogen-level hijinks, but early reviews of Neighbors peg the film being a genuine comedic treat. Perhaps it’s Rogen playing a far more mature (if that’s possible) character, or maybe it’s the idea of dueling neighbors – whatever the case, Neighbors could be the comedic hit from the summer.

Godzilla (Release in May 16th)
Ever since its brief tease back with Comic-Con 2012, Godzilla has been at their top your must-see list. Director Gareth Edwards (Monsters) clearly loves the home and wants to do this justice, and he’s certainly helped make his job easier through populating the film with A-level skill. But really, the true good thing about Godzilla rests with the enemies.
While some of the other summer releases may experience overexposure, Godzilla has the good thing about underexposure. That alone makes the conspiracy of seeing these relatively mysterious monsters go toe-to-toe much greater. It also doesn’t hurt that what we’ve seen of the movie thus far looks convincing on multiple levels.
Admittedly, Legendary and Warner Bros’ other large monster movie, Pacific Rim, did not win over domestic audiences, however the thinking is that a known property like this will have a better probability at success. Regardless, fan anticipation is very high for this one.
X-Men: Days of Future Past (Release in May 23rd)
When it had been first announced, X-Men: Days of Future Past seemed like the perfect idea. Combining the casts on the new First Class franchise and also the old X-Men series was nothing next to a dream scenario for enthusiasts, and with original director Bryan Singer back on board it felt like FOX had big plans in place. In fact, the studio echoed of which sentiment by announcing a follow-up in order to DOFP, X-Men: Apocalypse, well ahead of the 2014 film even hit theaters.
Yet, a lot has changed ever since then, and expectations appear to have changed at the same time. Some trailers have drummed up a great deal of excitement, promising a time-bending adventure that has the biggest superhero ensemble at any time put to film, while different promotional materials, like the Quicksilver Carl’s Jr. commercial, have had the other effect. That being said, it’s hard to imagine passing up on such a big comic book blockbuster.

Maleficent (Release in May 30th)
A major budget, live-action adaptation of Sleeping Beauty, Maleficent is easily among the riskiest releases of the thirty day period. On the one hand, the film follows inside the footsteps of Alice in Wonderland, which made lots of money for Disney, and they have Angelina Jolie in a part she seems born to participate in, but the rumors surrounding Maleficent‘s troubled production suggest this can be one of those historic breakdowns.
Or maybe the appeal of just one of Disney’s most iconic villains will likely be enough to carry the flick to box office success. The entire world of Maleficent certainly looks exclusive, but will only get the movie thus far. Either way, we’re curious to find out how effects-artist-turned-director Robert Stromberg has taken this untold story to existence.

A Million Ways to Die in the West (Release in May 30th)
Seth MacFarlane is arguably one of the most polarizing figures in comedy: a person either love him or a person hate him. Thankfully (for him) enough people fall from the former camp, which should help A Million Solutions to Die in the West do very well during the Memorial Day end of the week. It also doesn’t hurt in which MacFarlane, who also serves seeing that writer, director, and lead actor for the film, has surrounded himself having some quality talent in Liam Neeson, Charlize Theron, and also Neil Patrick Harris.
Although the creator of Family Guy seriously isn't very well versed in the particular live-action genre, particularly not as an on-screen actor, his showmanship will be hard to overlook. Combine that using this overly anachronistic concept, and there’s the possibility of plenty of clever laughs. Along with, if A Million Ways holds the identical appeals as MacFarlane’s last picture, Ted, it could end up making huge bank at the box office.
Once again, here are the 6 films we’re waiting for this month:
May 2nd : The Amazing Spider-Man 2
May 9th : Neighbors
May 16th : Godzilla
May 23rd : X-Men Days of Future Past
May 30th : Maleficent, A Million Ways to Die in the West
