The opening narration tells that, years before the events of the first movie, Lord Shen, the son of the peacock clan that rules Gongmen Area in ancient China, seeks to harness fireworks as being a weapon. After discovering from the actual court's goat Soothsayer that "a enthusiast of black-and-white" will defeat your ex, Shen leads an army to exterminate the panda population to avert the prophecy. Shen's parents are horrified when it reaches this atrocity and exile their child, who swears revenge.

Thirty several years later, Po is living his dream since the Dragon Warrior, protecting the Pit of Peace alongside his close friends and fellow kung fu professionals, the Furious Five. His tutor Shifu tells him, however, that they has yet to achieve inner peace. While defending a village from wolf bandits who've been stealing refined metal for Shen, Po is distracted by way of a symbol on the wolf boss's armour, which causes Po to employ a flashback of his mother and allows the wolves to flee. Po asks his goose dad, Mr. Ping, of his roots. Ping reveals that he found Po just as one infant in a radish dog house and adopted him, but Po is still unsatisfied, wondering how and why he ended up in the Valley of Peace to begin with.
