The film begins using a saber-toothed squirrel (known as Scrat) who is searching for somewhere to store his revered acorn. Eventually, as he tries to stomp it into your ground, he causes a large crack within the ground that extends for miles and miles and sets off a large avalanche. He seldom escapes, but finds himself stepped on by way of a herd of prehistoric animals. The animals are trying to avoid the ice age by simply migrating south, except for Manfred, an agitated mammoth who is heading north. Sid, a clumsy Megalonyx sloth left behind by his family, decides to take by himself and angers Carl and Frank, two Brontops by ruining their salad and is also attacked. Sid is soon stored by Manfred, who fights these off. Not wanting to possibly be alone and unprotected, Sid uses Manfred.
Meanwhile, Soto, the leader of a Smilodon pride wants revenge on several grouped humans by eating the chief's child son, Roshan, alive. Soto leads a raid for the human camp, during which Roshan's mother is separated on the rest and jumps down the waterfall when cornered by Soto's lieutenant, Diego. Intended for his failure, Diego is delivered to find and retrieve the child. Sid and Manfred spot Roshan and his mother near the lake, having survived her dive. The mother only has sufficient strength to trust her child to Manfred before she fades away. After much persuasion by Sid, they plan to return Roshan but when they will reach the human settlement, they believe it is deserted. They meet up with Diego, who convinces the set of two to let him help by simply tracking the humans. The several travel on, with Diego secretly leading those to his pack for an ambush.
