With 2003, John Tyree (Channing Tatum), a Staff Sergeant in america Army Special Forces is lying on the floor in combat gear with several gunshot wounds to his system. Coins begin to fall above him as, in a voiceover; he recalls a childhood trip to the U. S. Mint. He compares himself to a coin in america Military, and states that a final thing he thought about prior to he blacked out was "you".
With 2001, in Charleston, South Carolina, John is on holiday. He meets Savannah (Amanda Seyfried), a university student on spring break, when he rescues her purse from the water. Over the course of a fortnight, Savannah and John fall throughout love. John meets Savannah's family, her neighbor, Tim Wheddon (Henry Thomas), in addition to Tim's son, Alan (Luke Benward) who may have autism.
Savannah meets John's dad (Richard Jenkins), a reclusive man who is apparently obsessed with his coin series (specifically mules), but his authentic interest draws her, to John's surprise. Savannah mentions to John that will his father, like Alan, could have high-functioning autism. This upsets Bob, who storms off, and then gets to a fight with Savannah's pal Randy (Scott Porter) and, at the same time, accidentally punches Tim. John apologizes in order to Tim, leaves Savannah a notice, and then they spend a single last day together, parting using, "I'll see you soon then" rather than goodbye.
John and Savannah continue their relationship through letters, expecting to build a life together whenever he leaves the army. But the recent September 11 attacks produce him reconsider the army, in addition to he ultimately chooses to re-enlist. Over the next two years, the romance continues, through their letters. After a period of time, John finds himself anxiously awaiting the following letter, but when it arrives it is a Dear John letter, informing him that she gets become engaged to someone otherwise, John burns all of Savannah's text letters.
