A woman (Julianne Hough) leaves the woman's house after being shown in possession of a bloody knife. She is shown moments later buying a bus ticket, her hair currently cropped and bleached, and stops with a small town called Southport, Vermont. At the general store, your woman introduces herself as Katie. After acquiring a position as a waitress and buying a small house on the edge of town, Katie becomes pals with her neighbor, Jo (Cobie Smulders) and also meets Alex Wheatley, (Josh Duhamel), the manager of a local convenience store, and his two children, Lexie and Josh. Alex's wife tragically died of cancer quite a while prior.
Alex immediately takes some sort of liking to Katie, doing smaller helpful things, such as leaving a well used bike at her house. Each goes on a 'family' trip to the beach, and Alex asks her to travel canoeing with him, after which in turn, they fall in love. Lexie quickly accepts Katie, while Josh is usually initially resistant, believing Katie to become his late mother's replacement, but eventually accepts her likewise. Meanwhile, Kevin Tierney, a Boston officer, searches for Katie and, using his authority to be a police officer, sends out reports saying that she's a wanted murderer. Upon seeing her picture in the police station, Alex confronts Katie and gets angry that she didn't have confidence in him enough to even simply tell him her real name, Erin. The picture flashes to Kevin's boss confronting him at the office, pointing out he always posesses water bottle that happens to be filled with vodka, and shows that Erin was Kevin's partner.
