A young princess named Merida of the clan Dunbroch is given the longbow by her father, Master Fergus, for her birthday, to help her mother Queen Elinor's dismay. While venturing into the woods to fetch a run away arrow, Merida encounters a will-o'-the-wisp. Shortly afterwards, Mor'du, a giant demon-bear, attacks the family unit. Merida escapes on horseback together with Elinor, while Fergus fights off the bear at the price tag on his left leg. Now the free-spirited and headstrong girl together with much younger identical triplet inlaws, Merida is informed that she is to be betrothed to one of your ex father's allied clans. Elinor reminds Merida of a legend about a prince who ruined her own kingdom by pride and refusal to follow his father's wishes, warning her that failure to consent for the marriage could harm Dunbroch, but Merida is still dissatisfied with the arrangement.
Rival clans arrive using firstborn sons to compete within the Highland Games for Merida's surrender marriage. Merida, twisting the rules, announces she is eligible to compete on her behalf own hand as the first-born regarding Clan Dunbroch and defeats all of her suitors in an archery tournament, shaming the other clans. After getting into an argument with Elinor, Merida results in. In the forest, Merida follows the wisps for the hut of an elderly witch posing like a wood carver. Merida bargains while using the witch, who agrees to give Merida an enchanted cake to improve her mother's mind.
