Guy Trilby (Bateman), a 40-year-old middle school dropout discovers his biological father, who left his unwed mother upon learning of her pregnancy, runs the largest spelling bee in the USA, The Golden Quill.
Guy gets his revenge on the father he never met (Dr. William Bowman) by finding a loophole and attempting to win the Golden Quill spelling bee as an adult. Guys original goal is to ensure his father never forgets his name.
Along the way, he befriends a female reporter and a young contestant whom he exposes to the wilder side of life, while learning a little about himself.
While befriending another (10 year old) contestant Guy Trilby introduces the young boy to things like shoplifting, alcohol and looking at a bare chested hooker.
