Seventeen-year-old Betty Katherine, or M. K. (Amanda Seyfried), techniques in with her eccentric scientist pops, Professor Bomba (Jason Sudeikis), who's been searching for tiny humanoid troops called Leafmen. They protect this forest Bomba lives near coming from evil creatures called Boggans as well as their malevolent leader Mandrake (Christoph Waltz). An independent young soldier named Nod (Josh Hutcherson) decides to give up much to the ire in the no-nonsense Leafmen leader Ronin (Colin Farrell).

The queen in the forest, Queen Tara (Beyoncé Knowles), must choose an heir to her throne and is out to a field of leaf pods, guarded by way of laid-back slug named Mub (Aziz Ansari) and also a wannabe Leafman snail named Grub (Chris O'Dowd). Just after she chooses a pod, this Boggans attack. Tara flees the region with the pod, and though her bodyguards do their full capacity to protect her, they are soon overwhelmed with the sheer number of Boggans. Sooner or later, Ronin arrives for her plus the pair fly off on his hummingbird mount. They are subsequently attacked by Mandrake and his son Dagda (Blake Anderson). Dagda can be killed by Ronin, but Tara is fatally injured when Mandrake shoots her through an arrow.
