With a modern-day nursing home, an elderly man named Duke (James Garner) begins to read a romantic story from his notebook into a fell...
The story he tells begins inside June 6, 1940. In Seabrook Area, South Carolina, local country boy Noah Calhoun (Ryan Gosling) is usually smitten with seventeen-year-old heiress Allie Hamilton (Rachel McAdams) after seeing her with a carnival, and they share an idyllic summer bond. Noah takes Allie to a great abandoned house, which he explains which he intends to buy for these individuals. Later that evening, she asks him to produce love to her, but these are interrupted by Noah's friend Fin (Kevin Connolly) using the news that Allie's parents have the police out looking for the woman. When Allie and Noah come back to her parents' mansion, they exclude her from seeing Noah, which they called "trash, trash, trash". Each break up and the future morning, Allie's mother announces which the family is returning home to help Charleston.
Noah and Allie don't have a choice but to move on making use of their lives; Noah and Fin solicit to fight in World War II and Fin is murdered in battle. Allie becomes a volunteer nurse inside a hospital for wounded soldiers, exactly where she meets an officer branded Lon Hammond, Jr. (James Marsden), a new lawyer who is handsome, advanced, charming and comes from old Southern money. The two eventually become engaged, to the pleasure of Allie's parents, but Allie sees Noah's face when Lon requests her to marry him.
When Noah returns home from the war, he discovers his father has sold their property so that Noah can pick the abandoned house, fulfilling his lifelong dream to buy it for the departed Allie, whom by now he hasn't seen for countless years. While visiting Charleston, Noah witnesses Allie and Lon kissing with a restaurant; he convinces himself when he restores the house, Allie will come back to him. Later, Allie is startled to read in the newspaper that Noah has completed the property, and she visits him inside Seabrook.
