When Yuri Zhivago is orphaned after his mother's death, he is taken in through his mother's friends, Alexander "Sasha" (Ralph Richardson) as well as Anna (Siobhán McKenna) Gromeko, and develops with their daughter Tonya (Geraldine Chaplin).
Within 1913, Zhivago as a medical student in training, but a poet at heart, meets Tonya as she returns to Moscow from a long trip to Paris.
