Dilios, a Spartan soldier, narrates the story of Leonidas from his boyhood to transforming into a king of Sparta. Thirty a long time later, a Persian messenger arrives at the gates of Sparta, demanding the submission of Sparta for you to King Xerxes. In response to the demand, Leonidas kicks the messenger right into a large well. Knowing this will prompt the Persians to invasion, Leonidas visits the Ephors—ancient leprosy-ridden, lustful priests whose blessing he needs prior to Spartan council will authorize gonna war. He proposes they repel the numerically superior Persians with the terrain of Thermopylae (the Sizzling Gates) and funneling the Persians right into a narrow pass between the rocks and the sea. The Ephors consult this Oracle, who decrees that Sparta cannot go to war during their own religious festival Carnea. As Leonidas departs, two agents of Xerxes appear—one advisors, Theron, a Spartan—who bribe this Ephors with promises of concubines in addition to money.
Leonidas follows his strategy anyway, setting out with solely 300 soldiers, whom he calls his personal guards to prevent needing the council's permission. Although he regards the mission because certain suicide, he hopes this sacrifice will spur the authorities to unite against Persia. In route to Thermopylae, after seeing atrocities committed by the Persians, allied Arcadians join this Spartans. At Thermopylae they construct a wall to contain the invaders, using the bodies of Persian scouts as mortar.
