Eons ago, Bor, the father of Odin, clashes using the Dark Elf Malekith, who seeks to destroy the universe employing a weapon known as the Aether. Immediately after conquering Malekith's forces, including superior warriors called the Kursed, on the home world of Svartalfheim, Bor safeguards the Aether within a stone column. Unbeknownst to Bor, Malekith, his or her lieutenant Algrim, and a handful of Dark Elves escape into stopped animation.

In present-day Asgard, Loki stands imprisoned for his war crimes that is known. Meanwhile, Thor, alongside warriors Fandral, Volstagg and Sif repel marauders on Vanaheim, home in their comrade Hogun; it is one more battle in a war in order to pacify the Nine Realms following the reconstruction of Bifröst, the "Rainbow Bridge" concerning realms, which had been destroyed couple of years earlier. The Asgardians soon learn the Convergence, a rare alignment in the Nine Realms, is imminent; because event approaches, portals linking the worlds appear randomly.
