Sam Baldwin, a Chicago architect, loses his wife Maggie to cancer malignancy. He and his young boy Jonah start anew in Seattle, Wa, but Sam continues to grieve.

A year . 5 later, on Christmas Eve 1992, Jonah—who wants his father to identify a new wife—calls in to the talk radio show. Jonah persuades Sam to take a the air to talk about how exactly much he misses Maggie. Numerous women from around the country hear the program and, touched by the story, write to Sam.

One in the listeners is Annie Reed, the Baltimore Sun reporter. She is engaged to Walter but feels there may be something missing from their marriage. After watching the film An Affair to remember, Annie impulsively writes a letter suggesting that Sam meet her in addition to the Empire State Building on Valentine's day. She does not intend to mail it, but her friend and editor Becky should it for her and agrees to send Annie to Seattle to "look into doing story on those radio shows".

Sam begins dating a coworker, Victoria, which Jonah dislikes. Jonah, a baseball fan, reads Annie's letter and likes so it mentions the Baltimore Orioles, but he fails to convince his father to visit to New York to meet Annie. Around the advice of his friend Jessica, Jonah replies to Annie, agreeing to the revolutionary York meeting.
