In Brazil, various exotic birds are smuggled out from the country. In Moose Lake, Mn, a crate with a men's blue macaw hatchling falls away from a truck and is found by a little girl named Linda Gunderson, whom names him Blu. Fifteen many years later, Linda owns a bookstore. Blu, highly domesticated and struggling to fly, is ridiculed frequently because of the Canada Geese that come because of the outside of Linda's bookstore.

Some day, ornithologist Túlio Monteiro invites Blu as well as Linda to Rio de Janeiro on the condition that Blu, who could be the last male of his types, mates with a female macaw. Linda accepts and they fly to Rio, where Blu complies with a Red-crested Cardinal named Pedro as well as his Yellow Canary friend Nico. In Túlio's aviary, Blu meets Treasure, a fiercely independent blue macaw longing to flee to the wilderness. The macaws are grabbed by Fernando, an impoverished orphan young man, and a Sulphur-crested Cockatoo called Nigel, both of whom work for several grouped smugglers led by Marcel. Whilst Fernando has second thoughts in relation to his actions, Nigel tells the macaws that he vowed to smuggle exotic wild birds in revenge after his role on the television program had been replaced by one. However, because of Blu's familiarity with cages, the macaws are competent to flee into a jungle.
