The story will not unfold in chronological order. Its content has numerous flash-forward and flashback pieces, indicated with an overlaid digital clock showing some time advancing rapidly forward/backward to another location scene. In chronological order:
Wilee (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a disenchanted Columbia Law School graduate who's put off taking the bar exam because he can't bear to enter the humdrum life in the legal profession. He finds meaning and purpose in working as a thrill-seeking New york bicycle messenger despite arguments together with his girlfriend and fellow bike messenger, Vanessa (Dania Ramirez), who insists which he should make something of herself.
Her roommate, Nima (Jamie Chung), delivers $50, 000 that she has saved for just two years to Mr. Leung (Henry O), some sort of Chinese hawaladar, in exchange for any ticket that she must produce to Sister Chen, buying a place for Nima's son and mother a single of Sister Chen's ships in which gangs smuggle people from China to the united states.
Mr. Lin, a local mortgage loan shark, has learned of the ticket knowning that whoever returns it to Mr. Leung may collect Nima's money. He strategies Bobby Monday (Michael Shannon), some sort of gambling-addicted NYPD officer who owes him or her money, offering to clear Monday's credit card debt if Monday gets him this ticket. Monday begins searching pertaining to Nima, who decides to hire Wilee to produce the envelope with the priced to Sister Chen by 7 pm hours. After Wilee leaves, Nima is confronted with Monday, who coerces her into revealing that Wilee has the ticket and handing over this delivery receipt. After Monday simply leaves, Vanessa finds Nima, and learns the contents in the envelope.
