Emerge the 1700s, the Marquise de Merteuil (Glenn Close) seems virtuous and upstanding but is usually, in fact, a sexually ravenous, amoral schemer who plays games with men away from bitterness at the constricted section of women in her community. She decides to exact revenge on a recent lover by having their young new fiancée, Cécile de Volanges (Uma Thurman), this daughter of Merteuil's cousin Madame de Volanges (Swoosie Kurtz), lured and ruined. Merteuil calls on her behalf sometime partner, the rakish and also similarly amoral Vicomte de Valmont (John Malkovich), to accomplish the deed. At first, Valmont refuses the woman proposition; he is busy seeking to seduce the virtuous Madame de Tourvel (Michelle Pfeiffer), that's spending time at his aunt's manor house while her husband is abroad.

Upon discovering that the uptight and also superficial Madame de Volanges have been secretly writing to Madame de Tourvel for you to warn her against his nasty nature, Valmont changes his mind and decides to visit Merteuil's scheme.
