Cher Horowitz (Alicia Silverstone) is usually a good-natured but superficial girl that's attractive, popular, and extremely wealthy. A few months shy involving her sixteenth birthday, she has risen to the the top high-school social scene, and is happy and self-assured in the woman insular, fashion-obsessed world. She lives inside a Beverly Hills mansion with the woman father Melvin (Dan Hedaya), a new ferocious $500-an-hour litigator; her new mother has long since died, acquiring succumbed to complications while starting liposuction surgery. Cher's best friend is Dionne Davenport (Stacey Dash), that's also rich, pretty, and hip, and understands what it's love to be envied.

Among the few individuals to find much fault with Cher is Josh (Paul Rudd), her socially conscious ex-stepbrother who visits after a break from college. Josh in addition to Cher spar continually but without having malice; she refers to them as "granola breath" and mocks their scruffy idealism, while he teases her to be selfish, vain, and superficial, in addition to says that her only way in life is "toward the actual mall".
