Good most common interpretation of the particular storyline, the film can be divided in to a prologue, seven major episodes cut off by an intermezzo, and a good epilogue. If the evenings of each episode were joined with the morning from the respective preceding episode together to be a day, they would form seven consecutive days, which may possibly not be the case.

Prologue
1st Day Sequence: A helicopter transports a statue of Christ over an old Roman aqueduct outside Rome while a 2nd, Marcello Rubini's news helicopter, follows it in the city. The news helicopter is momentarily sidetracked by a gaggle of bikini-clad women sunbathing on the rooftop of the high-rise apartment building. Hovering previously mentioned, Marcello uses gestures to elicit non published numbers from them but fails in his attempt then shrugs and continues on adopting the statue into Saint Peter's Square.
