The film is determined during fictitious Space Shuttle assignment STS-157. Dr. Ryan Stone (Bullock) is a medical engineer on her 1st space shuttle mission aboard space Shuttle Explorer. She is associated with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalski (Clooney), that's commanding his final expedition. Throughout a spacewalk to service the Hubble Place Telescope, Mission Control in Houston warns the team with regards to a Russian missile strike on any defunct satellite, which has induced a chain reaction forming any cloud of space debris. Mission Control orders that this mission be aborted, and this shuttle begin reentry immediately. Communications with Mission Control are lost after that.

High-speed debris strikes the Explorer and also Hubble, and detaches Stone through the shuttle, leaving her tumbling as a result of space. Kowalski soon recovers Stone and so they make their way back towards the Space Shuttle. They discover that this Shuttle has suffered catastrophic damage along with the crew is dead. They utilize thruster pack to make their method to the International Space Station (ISS), and that is in orbit only about 900 mi (1, 450 km) aside. Kowalski estimates they have 90 minutes prior to a debris field completes an orbit and also threatens them again.
